Oxf., Bennet scholar 1833–37, hon. fellow 1872–7; B.A. 1837, M.A. 1839, D.C.L. 1874; student at Inner Temple 6 Nov. 1837; practised as a special pleader 1840–48; barrister I.T. 9 June 1848, bencher 30 April 1861 to death, reader 1875; went northern circuit, of which he became leader; Q.C. 22 Feb. 1861; lord justice of appeal 4 Aug. 1870 to death; P.C. 9 Aug. 1870; knighted at Osborn 9 Aug. 1870. d. 33 Lowndes square, London 15 June 1877.
