priacanthus

[Gr. priōn =a saw, and a kantha =a spine.] Preying. 1. Ichthy.: A genus of Percide (q.v.). Body short, compre ed, covered with small rough scales, which extend also over the short snout; one dorsal fin with ten spines, anal with three. Præoperculum serrated, with a flat, triangular spine at the angle. Seventeen species, from the tropical seas; all about twelve inches long; red, pink, and silvery-white the prevailing colors. 2.
