Greg or i an Chant
Chandler's Encyclopedia · 1898 · p. 16
The hymns which are at the base of the ritual of the R.C. Ch. have been called Greg or i an for centuries, on the strength of a tradition that their ordering was the work of Pope Gregory the Great. GEVAERT (q.v.) has dealt the tradition a blow which threatens it with ruin. The term will remain, neverthele , though the credit of the regulation of the hymns may be shifted from Gregory I. to the second or third pope of that name. See ECCLESIASTICAL MODES.
