Nessler's reagent

A mixture of 1 part of mercury bichlorid di olved in 6 parts of water, 2j4 parts of pota ium iodid di olved in 6 of water, and 6 of caustic potash di olved in 6 of water, the whole being then diluted to 36 parts; used for the detection of ammonium or its salts by producing a yellow or reddish brown color or a precipitate, according to the quantity of ammonium present.
