Laon

Ancient town of France, 87 m. n. e. of Paris; last capital of the Car loving i an kings; taken by Henry IV. 1594. The French were defeated here by the Allies under Blücher, March 10, 1814. Pop., 1891, 12,959. Lâo-Tsze, 6th century B.C. Chinese author of the treatise known as Táo Teh King ; reputed founder of the form of religion called Taoism, although the latter is not in consonance with the simplicity and freedom from superstition which the treatise displays.
