dengue

(den'ga) [Sp. a corruption of "dandy" fever.] Breakbone fever, dandy fever; a disease of tropical and subtropical regions, occurring epidemically, and marked by intense aching in the head, muscles, and joints, and fever; there are usually two paroxysms, separated by a quiescent interval, in the first of which there is an erythematous rash, in the second a roseola; the disease is thought to be due to a protozoan parasite transmitted by a mosquito of the genus Culex.
