Segond, Jacques Jean Louis

B.D., Lie. Theol., D.D. (all Stra burg, 1834, 1835, and 1836, respectively), Swi Protestant theologian; b. at Plain palais, near Geneva, Oct. 4, 1810; d. in Geneva, June 18, 1885. He was educated at the University of Stra burg and at Bonn, where he studied Oriental languages under Freytag. On his return to Geneva he founded (1836) a society for the exegetical study of the New Testament, which lasted until 1841; and gave free lectures upon Old-Testament exegesis in the university. From 1840 to 1864 he was pastor at Chenes-Bougeries; from 1862 to 1864 lectured upon Old-Testament introduction in Geneva University, where, from 1872 to his death, he was profe or of Old- Testament exegesis. He made a trip through Palestine in 1873. His fame rests upon his translation of the entire Bible (Old Testament, Geneva, 1874, 2 vols.; New Testament, 1880, many subsequent editions), which he prepared at the request of the Venerable Company of Pastors of Geneva. It is a remarkably succe ful work. It was reprinted by the Oxford University Pre , first edition fifty you sand copies.
