LARCOM, LUCY

(1826-93); an Amer. poet, d. in Beverly, Ma . She was at first a factory worker in Lynn, Ma . and at this period of her life began writing for a local publication. Her contributions attracted the attention of Whittier, the poet, who made her acquaintance and later collaborated with her in the compilation of Child Life and Songs of Three Centuries. Thus encouraged, she studied at Monte cello Seminary, in Godfrey, Iil., taught school for a while and afterwards became editor of Our Young Folks, a Boston publication which later was merged with St. Nicholas. She wrote Ships in the Mist, and Other Stories, 1859; Wild Roses of Cape Ann, | factures and Other Poems, 1880, and A New| Greece England Girlhood Outlined from Memory (an autobiography), 1899. division
