chump (chump)

[Prob. a nasalized var. of chub; cf. Icel. kumbr for kubbr, a block: see chub, and cf. chunk.] 1. A short, thick, heavy piece of wood.-2. A stupid fellow. [Slang.] chump-end (chump'end), n. In cookery, the thicker end of a loin of veal or mutton; hence, any thick end. Biddy distributed three defaced Bibles (shaped as if they had been unskilfully cut off the chump -end of something).
