Empyema

(im-pi-e'mah.) [Gr., a suppuration.] (Med.) A disorder in which purulent matter is contained in the thorax or breast, after an inflammation or suppuration of the lungs and pleura; it is attended with a difficulty of breathing and an inability to lie on the side opposite to that which is affected.
