(spēk'u-lum.) [L.] (Opt.) Any polished body employed for the purpose of reflecting light; but it is generally understood to mean a metallic surface,. one of gla being termed mirror.-S. metal, or that of which the mirrors of reflecting telescopes are made, usually consist of two parts of copper and one of tin; and its whitene is improved by a little arsenic.(Surg.) An instrument for dilating and keeping open awound, in order to examine it attentively. [s. 845]
