Lully, or Lulli, JEAN BAPTISTE DE, 1633-1687

Composer, Florentine by birth; founder of the French National opera; leader of Louis XIV.'s grande bande of 24 violins and 16 petits violons. He began his French career in the kitchen of Mdlle. de Montpensier. His significance in musical history is as the founder of the French school of opera and the first who made the rhythm and accent of the language to dominate his music.
