Dagobert I

(dā-go-bair',) king of the Franks, s. his father, Clovis II., 628. He subdued the Saxons, Gascons, and Bretons, and is celebrated for his magnificence,licentiousne , and cruelty. His minister, the goldsmith Eligius (St. Eloi), much contributed to the splendor of his reign. D. 638.-D. II. s. his father, Sigebert II., as king ofAustrasia, 656; D. 679.-D. III. s. his father, Childebert III., as king of the Franks, 711, and reigned only in name, the power being usurped byPepin d'Heristal, mayor of the palace. D. 715. [s. 260]
