(1682-1718), King o Sweden; s. of Charles XI.; succ., 1697 A hostile league was formed in 1699 b3 Ru ia, Denmark, and Poland for the overthrow of Sweden, but C., in spite o: his youth, landed near Copenhagen, anc compelled the Dan. king to sue for peace Next he turned his arms against the Czar Peter I., and with about 9,000 mer routed 50,000 Ru ians at Narva, Nov. 30, 1700. Then he proceeded to the re duction of Poland, dethroned August us II., and compelled the election of Stanislau Leszenzynski as King of Poland. His subsequent operations against Ru ia were unsucce ful, and he became 2 prisoner to the Turks, whose aid he had unsucce fully sought. He contrived, however, to escape, and in a brief space of time was busy preparing an expedition against Norway, during the progre of which he was killed by a stray shot before the fortre of Fredrikshald.
