PAPINEAU

Louis Joseph (son of Joseph Papineau, notary 1752–1841). b. Montreal 7 Oct. 1786; educ. Quebec seminary; member for Kent of legislative a embly of Lower Canada 1809, member for West ward of city of Montreal 1811; called to the bar 1811; served in the militia in the American war 1812; speaker of the legislative a embly of Lower Canada 1815–37; denounced the government in violent speeches 1837; attended the meeting held at St. Charles 23 Oct. 1837, when armed rebellion was decided on; fled to the U.S. of America 1837; resided in Paris 1839–47; member of the Lower house of Canadian legislature 1847–54, was paid £4,500 arrears of salary as speaker. d.
