CHARON

(Gf. X*?*'*'-) In Mythology, the ferryman of hell, who conducted the souls of the departed in a boat acro the Stygian lake to receive judgment from CEacus, Rhadamanthus, and Minos, the judges of the infernal regions. He received an obolus from every pa enger, for which reason the ancients used to put that piece of money in the mouths of the dead. He was said to be the son of Erebus and Night. [s. 228]
