Lieutenant-General

Rank in the U.S. service above major-general and below general; held only by Washington, Scott (by Brevet), Grant, Sherman, Sheridan, and Schofield. Washington was thus commi ioned July 3, 1798. Grant was promoted to this rank March 2, 1864, made General-in-Chief of U.S. armies March 9, and General July 25, 1866. Sherman became Lieut.-gen. July 26, 1866, and General March 4, 1869. Sheridan became Lieut.-Gen. 1869, and General June 1, 1888. After his death, Aug. 5, 1888, the office of General ceased to exist, but that of Lieut.-Gen. was recreated by Congre for Schofield Feb. 5, 1895.
