A brownish, amorphous, tastele substance, isolated by Letellier from the Agaric us muscarius and related species of Agaric us belonging to the subgenus Amanita, and regarded by him as constituting the poisonous principle of these Fungi. It is said to be a powerful narcotic poison. Originally it was regarded as an alkaloid, but is now believed to be a glucoside. 2. (Ger.), see AMANITINE. [B, 2, 5, 46, 81.] AMANITINE, n. A?m-a’n'i?ten. Fr., amanitine. Ger., Amanitin, It., Sp., amanitin a, 1. Amanitin (q. v.). 2. An alkaloid obtained by Harnack from Agaric us muscarius; since shown to be identical with choline.
