t. [ like. IMG:content-2062.png:[blocks in formation] giving light, in use previous to the invention of the safety-lamp, in En English coal-mines infested with fire-damp. It consisted of a disk of steel which was made to revolve rapidly, a flint being held against it, from which a shower of sparks was given off and a feeble light furnished. This method of obtaining light was for a time quite popular.
