DALLAS, ALEXANDER JAMES

(1759-1817), statesman, lawyer, and writer; famous for succe in found in pare bank, 1817, and financial administration. 1864), American diplomat, b. at Philadelphia, d. there. Admitted to the bar in 1813; he entered diplomatic service. Elected senator for Pennsylvania in 1831, he was minister to Ru ia, 18371839; and in 1844 was elected Vice President of the U.S. As president of the Senate his casting vote in 1846 repealed the protective tariff of 1842, and caused much indignation as he was believed to be a protectionist. He was U.S. minister to Great Britain, 18561861. A Series of Letters from London and Life of E. J. Dallas written by him were published after his death.
