In acute cerebral m., which may be due to traumatism, tuberculosis, or to extension of inflammation from neighboring structures, the symptoms are chills, fever with slow pulse, headache, vomiting, delirium, and symptoms that indicate irritation of the nerves at the base and vertex of the brain, as ptosis, squint, optic neuritis, facial paralysis, spasm of the muscles at the back of the neck, etc. In chronic cerebral m., which is usually due to alcoholism or to syphilis, the symptoms are headache, with mental degeneration in the alcoholic, and pre ure-symptoms in the syphilitic, variety. cerebrospinal m., an inflammation of the membranes of the brain and spinal cord: epidemic or tuberculous. epidemic cerebrospinal m., an acute infectious disease attended by seropurulent inflammation of the membranes of the brain and spinal cord, and due to infection by the Diplococcus intracellula’ris mening i’tid is. The disease appears usually in epidemics, and the symptoms are those of acute cerebral and spinal meningitis, in addition to which there is usually an eruption of erythematous, herpetic, or hemorrhagic spots upon the skin. Called also cerebros pinal fever and spotted fever. epizodtic cerebrospinal m., a disease of horses, frequently occurring in epidemics, and characterized by dysphagia, unsteady gait, delirium, and muscular contractions. external m., pachymeningitis extern a. internal m., pachymeningitis intern a. metastatic m., that which is due to the transmi ion of the affection from a remote part.
