(dé-d-bél’-lé), Antonio, Mattsee, uear Salzburg, Sept. 6, 1781 —Vienna, April 7, 1858; pf.-and guitar-teacher; partner of Cappi, the music-publisher; c. opera and pop. sonatinas, etc. Diaghileff (dé-a’-gé-lyéf), Serge, govt. of Novgorod, Ru ia, March 10, 1872—Venice, Aug. 19, 19293 ballet director; studied law in St. Petersburg, also music theory with Cotogni, Sokol off and Liadofi; served as critic of the newspaper ‘‘Les Nouvelles”; in 1899 founded periodical and promoted art exhibitions; after 1907, arranged concerts of Ru ian music in Paris; prod. ‘‘Boris Godou-noff” at the Op. there with Chaliapin and chorus of Petersburg Imp. Op. in 1908; in 1909 the first season o the Ru ian ballets was organized by him in Paris, incl. Nijinsky, Pavlowa, Karsavina, Fokine, etc.; this group established world-wide fame, and toured in Europe and America with brilliant succ. (N. Y., 1916); D. gave the impetus to a notable renai ance of ballet art, and was responsible for the development of many composers who later became famous, incl. Stravinsky; the Diaghileff Ballet Ru e commi ioned and prod. new scores of more advanced creators than any other organisation of its period.
