Besides its ordinary meaning, it is used for grandson, 2 Sam. 19.24. Descendant, Mat. 1.1,20. As a name of affection, 1 Sam. 3.6. Ex. 4.22, 1 Tim. 1.2; and of humility, 2 Kin. 8.9. It occurs in such phrases as, Son of the morning, Isa. 14.12. Son of Belial, 1 Sam. 2.12. The Hebrew word for son, ben or bar , is incorporated with names, as Benoni, son of sorrow, Gen. 35.18. Barjona, son of Jonas, Mat. 16.17.
