doil (doil)

[A dial. var. of dwaul, q. v.] Nonsense. [Prov. Eng.] so fine; a fool, and a doily stuff, would now and then find days of grace, and be worn for variety. Congreve, Way of the World, iii. 10. 2. A small ornamental napkin, often in colors, fringed and embroidered, and brought on the dinner-table on a de ert-plate, with the fingerbowl, etc., arranged upon it: also used for many similar purposes. Also spelled doyley.
