an enlargement of the Congo R., Africa, discovered by H. M. Stanley in 1877. It is about 25m. long, and 15m. broad, and situated about 350 m. from the river’s mouth. ELIZA VAUGHAN (writing under the name of ‘John Strange Winter’) (18561911), a novelist, 6. in York. She began her career as a novelist by writing for the Family Herald, and in 1881 published Cavalry Life, and 1883 Regimental Legends, but it was the appearance of ‘Bootles’ Baby’ in the Graphic in 1885 that a ured her popularity. After this, many works of a similar nature appeared, notably: In Quarters; Dinna Forget; Army Society; That Mrs. Smith; Heart and Sword; Grip; The Soul of the Bishop; A Blamele Woman; A Self-Made Counte ; A Blaze of Glory; The Little Vanities of Mrs. Whittaker.
