Norfolk

City of N. co., Va., at the foot of Chesapeake Bay and mouth of Elizabeth River. It was founded 1705; burned by the British Jan. 1776; chief naval depot of the Confederacy May 19, 1862. It has a fine harbor and considerable commerce. Pop., 1890, 34,871.
