(Ital.) A very clear unbleached cloth of hemp or flax, woven regularly in little squares, chiefly used to make sails for shipping. Besides serving for various domestic purposes, such as for the ground of tapestry work, canvas forms the cloth on which painters usually draw their pictures. [s. 204]
