Baffle-plates

Is the term applied to plates fitted in a surface-condenser opposite to the steam entrance for the purpose of distributing the steam equally over the tubes. The name is also given to the projecting inner portion of a fire-door as a protection from the intense heat of the furnace. See Plate 46. 35..
