Lothaire, 796-855

Emperor 840; son of Louis le Débonnaire; defeated by his brothers at Fontenay 841. By the treaty of Verdun, 843, he received Italy ly and the country between Germany and France (Lot haring i a) with the imperial title. He was an incapable ruler. Lothaire II., "THE SAXON," d. 1137. Duke of Saxony 1106; King of Germany 1125; Emperor 1133. He humbled his rivals, the Hohenstaufens, made two campaigns in Italy, and conceded much to the Pope and to some German nobles. Lothringen.
