Vowel

(vou'ěl.) [Fr. voyelle; L. vocal is.] (Gram.) A letter which does not require the aid of another for its pronunciation. In the English language, a, e, i, o, u, and sometimes w, and y, form the series of written vowels; the spoken vowels are, however, much more numerous. [s. 945]
