Crento

The Italian name of Trent. Crenton (tren'ton). The capital of New Jersey and of Mercer County, situated on the Delaware River in lat. 40° 13′ N., long. 74° 46′ W. It has manufactures of pottery, iron, tools, rubber goods, etc. It was settled in 1680, and was named Trenton in 1720; be came the capital in 1790; and was made a city in 1792. Population (1900), 73,307. Crenton, Battle of. A victory gained by the Americans under Washington over the British, Dec. 26, 1776. Washington cro ed the Delaware with 2,400 men on the night of Dec. 25, and attacked the He ian mercenaries (about 1,500) under Rahl. The He ians were defeated, and about 1,000 were captured.
