AVERNUS

small lake in Italy, occupying the crater of extinct volcano. The vapours from it were so fatal to birds, and its sides were so steep and darkened with forest, that it became the cla ical entrance to the lower, world, where Hecate had a grove and the Cumean Sibyl a grotto.
