ALDER

(Alnus), genus of shrubs trees of the order Betulacez, growing in moist places, often in thickets, in the temperature zone and W. South America. The wood is used by turners, and, owing to its durability under water, for piles in building (eg. in Venice and Amsterdam), and the bark in tanning and dyeing. (i.e. with net-veined wings) insects reHie to the ant-lions, with aquatic arvee, ally, ‘older man’; hence counsellor and magistrate; in modern England, municipal officer advanced from ranks of city or town-councillors; the Scot, equivalent is ‘Bailie.’
