capote (kapot)

[F. capote, f. (formerly also capot, cappot, m.) (= Sp. Pg. capote = It. cappotto, Turk. qaput, qapud ), dim. of cape, a hood or cape: see capel.] 1. A large coarse cloak, properly with a hood. Specifically-(a) In some military uniforms, the regulation outer garment, consisting of a very long and full cloth coat. (b) An outer garment for women, made of camlet or cloth, covering the person completely and reaching nearly to the ground.
