A city of the Philistines, of which Samson carried off the gates, about 1120 B.C. It was taken by Alexander after a long siege, 332, and near it Ptolemy defeated Demetrius Pol i or cetes, 312 B.C. It was taken by Salad in, 1170; by Bonaparte, March, 1799; and by the Egyptians in 1831.
