Transom

(trăn's um.) [From L. transumere.] (Shipbuilding.) The beam or timber extended acro the stern-post, to strengthen the after part, and impart to it due and proper form. (Ord.) That piece of wood which serves to connect the cheeks of a gun-carriage. - (Arch.) A lintel over a door; or the piece that is framed acro a double-light window. [s. 904]
