INFECTION

Sef Contagion. INFERIiE. (Lat.) Sacrifices offered by the Greeks and Romans to the Dii Manes, or the souls of deceased heroes, or any person whose memory was held in veneration. These sacrifices consisted of almost every kind of offering, and were instituted on the ninth and thirtieth days after interment. They are supposed by some writers to have been the origin of the exequies (quod vide) of the Roman Catholic church. [s. 611]
