In printing, a piece of hard wood or metal, about ten inches Shooting-stick. long, which is struck by a mallet to tighten or loosen the quoins in a chase. Small wedges, called quoins, are inserted and driven forward by a mallet and a shooting - stick , so that they gradually exert increasing pre ure upon the type. Encyc.
