A Chile an politician. He was a mer chant, and took little part in politics before 1827. Ovalle made him minister of war 1830-31, and from that time he exerted influence which made him practically ruler of Chile, He treated the revolting liberals with great severity, and to him were mainly due the institutions which kept the conservatives in power for more than 40 years.
