Lebanon

(leb'a-non,) a famous and extensive mountain-range of W. Asia, forming two chains running parallel wise through Syria and Palestine, in a S.S.W. course, and having terminating S. outliers in Mounts Horeb and Sinai, in N. Arabia. The W. chain (anc. Libanus) advances S. out of the Natolian mountain-system as far as Lat. 34° 12′, where it culminates in Djebel Mak mel, a summit 12,000 feet above sea-level. The E. branch (anc. Anti-Libanus) is an offshoot of the range of Mt. Taurus, and attains its highest point (5,000 ft.) in the anc. Mt. Hermon, in Lat. 33° 26'; thence it pursues a course which terminates in the sandy region of N. Arabia. Bet. the two chains is the valley of Bakash (Celo-Syria), and more S. is the valley of the Jordan, which last-named river, together with the Orontes, rises in the Lebanon country. Pop. 2,749. -In Pennsylvania, a S.E. central co., b. N. by the Kittatinny Mts.; area, 300 sq. m. Pop. 34,117.- Its C., Lebanon, situate at abt. 25 m. E. of Harris burg, is an important commercial place. Pop. 6,727.- In Tenne ee, a town, C. of Wilson co., abt. 30 m. E. of Nashville. Pop. 2,073. [s. 534]
