[Eng. octyl; -ene.] Chem.: C8H16. Octene. Caprylene. Obtained by heating chloride of octyl and alcoholic potash, and by distilling fatty acids with potash-lime. It is a mobile oil, lighter than water, boiling at 118-120°. Insoluble in water, but very soluble in alcohol and ether. Nitric acid acts on it with energy, forming nitro-octylene, C8H15(NO2).
