Ph.D., Lie. Theol. (both Tubingen, 1855\ D.D. (hon., Gdttingen, 1860), LL.D. (hon., Marburg, 1883); b. at Stuttgart, May 17, 1826; studied in Tubingen 1844- 48, and Berlin 1849-50; became repetent in the evangelical seminary in Tubingen, 1850; profe or extraordinary, especially of New-Testament theology, and university preacher, in Gottingen, 1855; ordinary profe or, especially of systematic theology, at Breslau 1860, at Halle 1870; since 1865 consistorial councillor, and since 1877 member of the Magdeburg consistory. His theological standpoint is that of the so-called orthodox new German theology, with critical reference to the biblical revelation and the facts of the moral and religious Christian consciousne , and effort after the union of the Luther an and Reformed confe ions. He studied Presbyterianism in Scotland in 1849, and took an active part in organizing the new consistorial constitution, which has Presbyterian features.
