is probably a native of tropical Asia, and certainly two of the most important cotton products take their names from Asiatic towns—muslin front Mosul, and calico from Calicut. It likes light soils in warm frostlc climates, and requires plenty of moisture and salt. Consequently, it grows best on low coastal lands in tropical latitudes. The three great C. countries are U.S.A., India, and Egypt. The famous ‘sea-island’ cotton for the Swi and French muslins comes from Florida, ria Charleston or Savannah, the shorter * upland* C. comes from the Mi i ippi basin, especially via Nov Orleans. The best Bombay C. comes from Berar, and the Egyptian COVENT from Siut. The development of the Indian and Egyptian C. was due to the C. famine and the consequent misery, especially in Lancashire and Lan arks hire, caused by the Civil War in U.S.A.
