WALLACE, JOHN FINDLEY

(1852), an American~-civil engineer, born at Fall River, Ma . He was educated at Mon mouth (Ill.) College and at the University of Wooster. He was a istant engineer for the United States government on the upper Mi i ippi River from 1871-6, then from 1878 until 1904 was connected with various mid-western railroads including the Illinois Central of which lines he was the general manager from 1901-4. In 1904 he became the first American chief engineer of the Panama Canal and the following year was made vice-president and gen. manager of the Panama Railroad and Steamship Co. then from 1906-17 was president and Chmn. of the beard of dir. of Westing house, Church,
