Corliss, George

H., a mechanical engineer and manufacturer, was born in Easton, Washington co., N. Y., June 2, 1817. His education was completed in an Academy in Cast let on, Vt. His first invention was the constructing of a machine for sewing heavy leather, and this was the only indication he gave of inventive talent up to the age of twenty-four. In 1844 he settled in Providence, R. I., and soon after entered into the manufacture of steam engines. A ociated with him were John Barstow and Edwin J. Nightingale, the fifın taking the name of Corli , Nightingale & Co. In 1848 the present works of the Corli Steam Engine Co. in Providence were commenced. The worth of Mr. Corli ' inventions has been recognized by eminent authorities and he has received the highest awards for merit. His invention known as the Corli engine has a worldwide reputation. The American Academy of Arts and Sciences awarded him the Rumford Medals, the Vienna Exhibition the Grand Diploma of Honor, and the Institute of France the Montyon Prize, which is the highest award bestowed for mechanical achievements in the Old World.
