Griffis, William Elliot

D.D. (Union College, Schenectady, N.Y., 1884), Congregationalist; b. in Philadelphia, Penn., Sept. 17, 1843; graduated at Rutgers College, New Brunswick, N.J., 1869, and at Union Theological Seminary, New-York City, 1877; became pastor of the First Reformed Church, Schenectady, N.Y., 1877; of the Shawmut Congregational Church, Boston, Ma ., 1886. He was in the 44th Penn. Vols, during Lee's invasion of Pennsylvania, 1863; editor of Our Me enger, Philadelphia, Penn., 1864; in the educational service of the Japanese Government at Fukui and Tokio, organizing schools and teaching physical science, 1871-74.
