See Andrada, Gomes Freire de. Bobadilla (bo-bä-thel'yä), Francisco de. Died at sea, probably July 1, 1502. A Spanish officer who, in 1500, was sent to Hispaniola to investigate the affairs of that colony, and especially to inquire into charges made against Columbus. On his arrival at Santo Domingo (Aug. 23, 1500), he summoned Columbus before him, imprisoned him and his brothers, and sent them to Spain. Bobadilla remained as governor of the colony until the arrival of Ovando, April 15, 1502. Bobbin Boy, The. A nickname of Nathaniel P. Banks. It was given bim because he worked as a boy in the cotton-factory of which his father was superintendent. A book for boys, with this title, containing his early Body life has been puurdens. Gardens in the rear (bo bo-le) of and adjacent to the Pitti Palace in Florence. They are open to the public, and are filled with fountains, grottoes, and statues: some of the latter are by John of Bologna. From the terrace is a magnificent view of Florence. The land was bought in 1549 by Eleanora of Toledo, wife of Cosimo I., duke of Tuscany. The laying out was commenced by the sculptor Tribolo who died 1550, and finished by Buontalenti. She equipped three ve els in the revolution of 1821, one of which she commanded. She participated in the siege of Tripolitza, Sept., 1821. Bobruisk (bo-bro-isk'). A town in the government of Minsk, situated on the Beres in a in important fortre . Population, 58,056. lat. 53° 15′ N., long. 29° 10° E. It contains an Bobs (bobz), or Bobs Bahadur. [Hind., 'hero,' 'champion,' a title of respect.] An affectionate nickname given to General Sir Frederick Roberts by the British soldiers in India. Boca del Drago and of Trinidad, West Indies, and the South American mainland of Paria. It was so named by Columbus, who first pa ed through it, Aug. 15, 1498. The pa age is obstructed by three islands in it, and is noted for its furious currents, caused partly by the equatorial ocean current and partly by the outflow of the Orinoco. Boca del Sierpe (bo'kä del se-er'pā). [Sp., 'serpent's mouth. The strait between the southwestern point of the island of Trinidad and the lowlands at the mouth of the Orinoco. It was so named by Columbus, who first pa ed through it into the Gulf of Paria, Aug. 3, 1498. The pa age is subject to heavy currents and eddies. Bocage (bo-käzh'), Le. 1. A district in Poitou, France. 2. A district in Normandy. Bocardo (bo-kär'do). An old gate (north gate) of Oxford, by the Church of Michael, stroyed in 1771. The room over it was used as a prison. Boca Tigris (bō'kä te'gris), or the Bogue, Chin. Hu Mun (hö mun'). ['The tiger's River, 40 miles southeast of Canton, China. The mouth.'] A narrow pa age in the Canton Bogue forts were stormed by the British in 1841 and 1857. Boccaccio (bok-kä'chō), Giovanni. Born probably at Certaldo, Italy, 1313: died at Certaldo, 21, A celebrated Italian novelist and poet. As a youth he came to Florence; about 1330 He served the Florentine state several times as amba ador, and lectured at Florence on the "Divina Com media" from 1373 to 1374. His chief work was the "Dec a me rone," settled at Naples; and returned to Florence about 1341. a collection of one hundred stories.
