Hidden; secret; occult; as, Cryptic ways of working." - Glanville. Cryptically, adv . Occultly; secretly. Crypto branch us, n. [Gr. kryptos , hidden, and branchia, gills.] ( Nat . Hist .) A genus of Batrachia, in which the gill-aperture disappears early in life. Three species are known: the Crypto branch us (menopoma) Alleghaniensis, found in many rivers of N. America; the C. fusc us , from South Carolina; and the C.japonicus , which is the largest of all known naked Amphibia, being three feet long. A fo il species is found in the tertiary strata at Eningen.
