(kor’teks), gen. cor’tic is [L.].. 1. The bark of a tree or root. 2. The rind of a fruit. 3. The outer layers of an organ as distinguished from its inner substance. Ο. cer’ebri, the cortex of the brain, composed mainly of gray or cineritious substance. c. re’nis, the cortical substance ef the kidney, made up of urinary tubes and blood ve els, supported by a stroma or matrix.
