(1762-1830), king of to|Great Britain and Ireland; became rince-regent, 1811, owing to George TIL's insanity; succ. as king, 1820. He kept Tories in office; m. Caroline of Brunswick-Wolf enb i it tel, 1795, but soon separated from her; her trial, 1820, in Tories joined ministry, 1822. G. had to receive Canning as Foreign Sec. and Leader of House of Commons. Canning freed Britain from Holy Alliance; Peel, as Home Sec., reformed Criminal Law. Canning’s ministry (1827) was followed by Goderich’s failure, and Wellington Peel ministry (1828-30) was marked by question of Catholic Emancipation. and unprincipled.
